Purchasing shoes and mattresses is not an easy process for me. I went to many different stores to try different kinds of mattresses and did a great deal of online research on customer satisfaction with mattress types and manufacturers.

Because I have always slept on firm or extra-firm tight top inner spring mattresses, I focused on the 3, 3.5 and 4 firmness levels. The second night I noticed that the mattress had become a bit firmer. The instructions ask that the mattress be allowed to expand for 48 hours.

My guess is that the firmness of the mattress base is affected by the expansion of the foam and the amount of air that goes into the foam and the latex top. To me this mattress does not feel like an inner spring, memory foam, or pure latex mattress. The pure latex mattresses that I tried were a bit bouncy and very hard (even for my taste). I find that this Ultimate Dreams Latex Mattress does not require a topper.

I weigh 235 pounds and find that the heaviest parts of my body to some extent sink into the mattress, but are not surrounded by the mattress as happens with memory foam. Several years ago I experienced short-term lower back pain. Side sleep is definitely more comfortable than what I was experiencing with the tight-top firm innerspring.

It has now been a week, and I have noticed that my sleep is deeper with this mattress, and it is very conforming to both my, and my wife's body. The slight odor dissipated after 2 days, and we are enjoying this both very much. I usually sleep with a CPAP due to my sleep apnea, but my wife has informed me that even without the CPAP, I am no longer snoring because I am able to sleep continuously on my side all night.

One other observation is that this mattress is best paired with a high and dense pillow. I don't use high pillows with other types of mattresses. Then states that it is a fact that the foam base of this mattress is hard and uncomfortable. That opinion is likely to be influenced by the reviewer's previous experiences, and it does not correlate with my assessment.

My guess is that I would have been happy with a firmer mattress (3, or 3.5) or a more plush mattress (6). The Ultimate Dreams Latex Mattress Queen Size Ultra Plush  is well designed and constructed.
